Water Valley’s rally falls short

NETTLETON — The Lady Blue Devils’ rally was too little, too late on Thursday evening at James Malone Field.

After falling behind early, the Water Valley softball team was unable recover in time before eventually losing to the Nettleton Lady Tigers 6-1 in Game 1 of the second round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs.
The game’s final score doesn’t do justice to how the Lady Blue Devils finished the game, however.

After surrendering five runs in the first two innings — while only mustering one base runner — the Lady Blue Devils began to pick up their play as the game progressed.

In the seventh inning alone Water Valley recorded four singles and Ashley Phillips scored the team’s lone run on a sacrifice fly from Erica Rice.

Rice, after misfiring on two attempted bunts with Phillips and Haley Vance on base, squared up and poked a hit to left field that scored Phillips from third base. (May 6, 2011, Page 8A)
