Ole Miss’ defense has had some good moments and some not-so-good moments this season.
The unit opened league play as the Southeastern Conference’s top defense, but has since fallen to ninth in fielding percentage.
Looking for some sort of spark, Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco opted to switch up the Rebels’ infield configuration on Saturday.
Second baseman Alex Yarbrough played third, shortstop Blake Newalu moved to second, and third baseman Austin Anderson played shortstop, the position he was recruited to play.
The change had pretty good results, especially considering the trio found out approximately three hours before pregame.
Yarbrough made his first assist (5-3) on the first ball he saw at the hot corner, then made his first error at third (and sixth of the season) on the very next one hit to him. Newalu made two putouts with one assist, while Anderson had one assist. (May 16, 2011, Page 4B)
