Former Ole Miss defensive tackle Jerrell Powe heard his name called in the 2011 National Football League Draft on Saturday, selected in the sixth round by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 199th overall pick.
Powe’s selection marks the ninth Rebel draftee in the last three years and third defensive lineman. He is the third former Ole Miss player drafted by the Chiefs in the past two years and becomes the fifth Rebel to join the K.C. roster, along with Dexter McCluster, Kendrick Lewis, Darryl Harris and Charlie Anderson.
A native of Waynesboro, Powe garnered second team All-SEC honors in 2009 and 2010. He missed only one game in his three seasons in the Red and Blue and started 22 of 25 games the past two years. The 6-foot-2, 320-pounder piled up 69 total tackles, 24 TFLs and seven sacks over his career. (May 2, 2011, Page 3B)
