      LHS grad, 19, killed in wreck

      Demetrius Owens, 19, of Lafayette County was killed Friday morning when the car he was a passenger in overturned, throwing him out of the vehicle. Funeral arrangements are incomplete with Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford. (more…) (May 27, 2011)

          Community begins to rebuild

          The storms on April 27 — one month ago today — destroyed 18 homes and damaged hundreds of other homes and businesses around the county. The neighborhoods of Pine Flat, Yocona and north Oxford are rebuilding as the community joins together to help form a new long-term recovery group. (May 27, 2011, Page 1A, 8A)

            Horton retires after 3 decades of teaching

            Pam Horton has retired from her job as cooperative education coordinator for the Oxford-Lafayette School of Applied Technology after 27 years with the schools in Oxford and Lafayette. (May 27, 2011, Page 1a, 2a)

                Friday’s obituaries

                • Viola Mason Joseph — 92, of Water Valley died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, on her birthday. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sander’s Chapel. Burial will follow in Christian Memorial Cemetery, adjacent to the church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
                • Helen Mae “Sista Girl” Wafer — 63, died Sunday, May 15, 2011. Services were held Saturday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee. Burial followed at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee. Northwest Funeral Home Chapel of Milwaukee was in charge of arrangements.

                    Rebels hopeful despite exclusion from Hoover

                    COLUMN: It was an different sight to see the Diamond Rebels practicing at Oxford-University Stadium instead of playing at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., on Thursday.
