The funk that the Oxford baseball team found itself mired in at the end of the regular season is officially over. A determined bunch of Chargers punched their way into the MHSAA’s Class 5A North Half title series on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Neshoba Central in Philadelphia.
A night after the Chargers defeated the Rockets 3-1 in the opener on the strength of a complete game pitching effort from left-hander Hunt Halford, OHS got another outstanding pitching performance from senior right-hander Zac Barber to close out the series in two games. The Chargers (18-10 overall) now await the winner of tonight’s game between New Hope and Ridgeland to find out their opponent in the North Half series.
For OHS coach Chris Baughman, Saturday’s win was significant because it showed the team’s drive and ability to take a game away from a solid opponent. (May 9, 2011, Page 4B)
