An investigation on the part of the Office for Civil Rights has led to a public hearing regarding the demotion and re-assignment of former Lafayette High softball coach Cay Papagolos earlier this year.
The OCR is currently investigating whether the Lafayette County School District failed to provide equal athletic opportunities to participants in the girls’ athletics program at LHS and at the middle school.
In material made public under a Freedom of Information Act request, OCR is looking into several issues that may not be in accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in all education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.
Specifically, the OCR is investigating some or all of the following: Accommodation of student interests and abilities; provision of equipment and supplies; scheduling of games and practice time; opportunity to receive coaching and academic tutoring; assignment and compensation of coaches and tutors; provision of locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities; and provision of medical and training facilities and services.
