A goal of becoming one of the better cross country programs in Class 4A, and North Mississippi, eight years ago has led to an honor for Lafayette High School and head coach Ben Mikell.
Thanks to two straight top five finishes at the MHSAA’s state cross-country meet in Clinton, among other accomplishments, Mikell was honored by the Mississippi Association of Coaches as the girl’s cross-country Coach of the Year recently.
Eight years ago when Mikell was approached by LHS Athletics Director Jeff Nelson to turn the program into a winner, Mikell showed he was up to the task by gradually improving the team’s results each year.
Two years ago the Lady Commodores finished No. 5 at the state meet, and this past fall, they were No. 2, a season after the LHS boys finished second overall. (May 18, 2011, Page 6)
