Lafayette’s girls track team put the cap on the most successful season in school history on Saturday at the MHSAA Class 4A state meet in Pearl when the 4×400 meter relay team finished first overall.
The Lady Commodores totaled 52 points to finish second out of 31 schools and bring home a runner-up trophy. Three teams finished a point behind LHS in a tie for third place. One of those teams was region and division foe Center Hill, who topped the Lady Commodores in the division championship and at both the region and North Half meets.
Pontotoc won the 4A girls meet with 118 points. Port Gibson won the 4A boys title with 74 points, while Poplarville and Noxubee County followed with 59 and 58 points. Lafayette’s boys finished 15th out of 31 schools with 16 points.
The Lady Commodores’ 4×400 team ran the event in 4 minutes, 14 seconds, with Mariah Buford leading the team in the anchor leg portion of the race. Joining Buford on the team were Megan Norphlet, Aisha Hickinbottom and Janae Westbrook. (May 16, 2011, Page 2B)
