Good, bad news regarding Smith’s injury

So, there’s good news and bad news regarding Matt Smith’s injury.

The bad: Smith fractured the third metacarpal in his left (glove) hand diving for a ball in right field during the Rebels’ 11-9 victory at Arkansas State on Wednesday.

The good news: Smith had his surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson bumped up to early Thursday afternoon and if his recovery goes as planned, he could be back in some capacity for Ole Miss’ final regular season series at Arkansas.

In the hopes of a quicker return to the field, Smith will have a plate put around his fractured bone rather than have a cast placed on his injured hand. If Smith would have been fitted for a cast, Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco speculated he could have been out six or eight weeks. (May 6, 2011, Page 7A)
