Former area standouts help lead USM to No. 2 seed in ATL

The Southern Miss baseball team will travel to Atlanta for its ninth-straight NCAA postseason berth and the 12th in the school’s history.
All the games will be played at Russ Chandler Stadium on the Georgia Tech campus.

The tournament will run with 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. games on Saturday and Sunday, with an if necessary game slated for Monday at 6 p.m.

Southern Miss (39-17) captured a share of the Conference USA regular-season title this spring, its first since the 2003 campaign, and with a win in the regional will capture its third 40-win season in the last four years.

This will be the second time the Golden Eagles have traveled to Atlanta for a NCAA postseason regional. The Golden Eagles won the 2009 regional there and went on to their first-ever College World Series appearance.

This will be the first time Southern Miss has met Mississippi State in the postseason.

The USM roster includes two players from the L-O-U area in Josh Thomason and Matthew Shaw.

Thomason, a former EAGLE Player of the Year at Lafayette, was 2-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 12 appearances, striking out 19 and walking 7 in 41 innings.

Shaw, a former Oxford standout, appeared in just two games this season and pitched in 2.1 innings.

Former Lafayette coach Richy Harrelson is an assistant coach on USM’s staff as well. (May 31, 2011, Page 9)
