HERNANDO — It was business as usual for the Oxford Chargers on the tennis courts as they continued their march towards a another Class 5A state championship.
OHS wrapped up its second straight 5A North Half title on Thursday with a 6-1 win over Hernando a year after defeating Ridgeland for the North Half title. The win advanced the Chargers (18-1 overall) to a meeting with the winner of Thursday’s Stone County-Gautier on Monday morning for the 5A state title at the Ridgeland Tennis Center.
The Chargers have yet to play their best tennis of the season, coach Louis Nash said, but they came up strong when they were challenged by Hernando at different points during the contest.
Singles player Zach Wilder was the first OHS player off the courts on Thursday as he easily dispatched Hernando’s Michael Price 6-0, 6-0. Last year it was Wilder who clinched the match victory for the Chargers over Ridgeland and his play on Thursday epitomized the work and progress Wilder has made his senior year.
