Led by junior sprinter Mariah Buford, the Lafayette Lady Commodores finished third out of 18 teams in Saturday’s Class 4A North Half meet held at Mississippi State. LHS finished with 72 points at the meet that Pontotoc won with 157 points. Center Hill was second at the girls’ meet with 79.5 points.
Buford won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.54 seconds and finished second in the 400 in 1 minute, 1.37 seconds. The first-place finish garnered 10 points for the Lady Commodores, while her second-place finish grabbed the team eight points. Both marks qualified Buford for Saturday’s Class 4A state meet at Pearl.
Joining Buford at the upcoming state meet as individuals will be Esmeralda Rodriguez, who finished second in the 3,200 run with a 12:49.51 and fourth in the 1,600 with a 5:51.38; Manon Mullen, who finished third in the 3,200 with a 13:09 and Ebony Sawyer, who was second in the shot put with a 35-1. Lafayette’s girls also qualified for the state meet in the 4×200 relay (first, 1:46.14) and the 4×400 (second, 4:19). Making up the 4×200 team were Nikki McChristian, Janae Westbrook, Buford and Brianna Everett. The 4×400 team included Buford, Westbrook, Meg Norphlet and Mullen. (May 9, 2011, Page 1B)
