St. Andrew’s halts OHS’s winning streak

Oxford tennis’ amazing winning streak came an unfortunate end on Tuesday with a 4-3 loss to St. Andrew’s in Ridgeland.

After the Chargers (13-1 overall) defeated Madison Central in the first match of an afternoon-evening doubleheader, the Class 3A power Saints ended the streak at 120 matches. OHS won three straight state championships during the period and defeated teams from all classes.

OHS coach Louis Nash said the Saints played well and should go on to win the 3A title. Nash added he thought his team played hard and just as good as St. Andrew’s but they were just beaten in the end by the first team that proved they could match up with the Chargers all the way through the lineup. Nash said the goal following the loss was to continue to improve the team heading into the Class 5A playoffs and start a new winning streak in the process.

St. Andrew’s captured four of the five doubles matches to gain Tuesday’s victory, with two of them being decided in tiebreakers. Oxford went 1-1 in those matches. (April 13, 2011, Page 9)
