The Water Valley track and field squad stood out at the recent Division 2-3A meet at Winona, with seven division champions and six runner-ups. The Blue Devils will have 16 athletes advance to the Class 3A regional meet at Winona on April 30.
“For Coach (Bryant) Mix and my first year we’re tickled to death to have seven claim championships, six finish as runner-ups and 16 advance to the north regional meet, especially when you look at the ages of our team,” coach Richard Russo said. “We have a real young team.”
The following are Water Valley’s champions: Montez Clark (shot put), E.J. Bounds (triple jump), Zach Bobbitt (400-meter dash) and the 4×400-meter relay team of Devin Fleming, K.J. Lee, Cortaveus Hawkins and Bobbitt.
Daimion Pollard was the runner-up in the discus and Lee placed second in the 110-meter hurdles. Jarrard Smith placed third in the 200-meter dash, Mark Gooch placed foruth in the high jump and Jonathan Kent placed fourth in the 800-meter run.
The 4×100-meter relay team of Terry Flemons, Bounds, C.J. Jackson and Eric Buckley placed second. (April 21, 2011, Page 7)
