PHS Warriors end Lafayette’s season

Strong doubles play helped lift the Pontotoc Warriors to a 5-2 win over the Lafayette Commodores in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
The loss ended the season for the Commodores, who showed tremendous improvement during the year under first-year coach Debbie Swindoll.

Lafayette’s two wins came from girls singles player Mallory Davis, who beat Kristen Panniston 6-2, 6-3. The No. 1 boys doubles team of Jacob Roberts and Hunter Knight also earned a win, 6-3, 8-6, over Braden Timmons and Jacob Hatcher.

Pontotoc’s Jacob Ferguson defeated Garrett Reed, 6-2, 6-2 in boys singles, while four PHS doubles teams earned wins. The No. 2 boys team of Cameron Timmons and Ryan Henry beat Barron Pruitt and Austin Arrington 6-4, 6-4; Haylee Walker and Anna Chrestman topped Kathryn Owen and Abbey Pate 6-0, 6-1; Katherine Downing and Frankie Torren downed Lauren Cullen and Ashley Smith 6-2, 6-1, while Anna Wing and Piercen Burchfield beat Tyler Odom and Brittany Mann 6-4, 6-2. (April 25, 2011, Page 3B)
