Led by a first-place finish from M.C. Pate and Toinella Marion, the Lafayette girls powerlifting team finished third at the MHSAA’s Class II State Meet held at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
Lexington-McClain won the overall girls title, while Pontotoc just edged LHS by two points to claim second place.
Pate won the 97-pound weight class by totaling 495 pounds, five pounds more than her biggest rival, Pontotoc’s Shannon Montgomery. Pate squatted 180 pounds, benched 90 and deadlifted a personal best 225 to record the total. Marion won the 123 title with a 665. She squatted 240, benched 110 and deadlifted 315.
Eight Lady Commodores medaled during the meet. Others who competed included: Megan Wooten in the 97 class, (fourth, 415), Meg Norphlet in the 105 class (second, 515), San Hairston in the 123 class (third, 590), Corey Hollis in the 132 class (third, 615), Moon Campbell in the 132 class (fourth, 600), Jazmine Jones in the 165 class (fifth, 635) and Ashley Carter in the 220 class (second, 775).
