Wednesday’s obituaries
- Currie F. Brooks — 73, died Monday, April 25, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sylva Rena Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Sylva Rena Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 this evening at Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley.
- Sammie Lee Rogers — 95, died Saturday, April 23, 2011, in the Tippah County Hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Grove M.B. Church in New Albany. Burial will follow in the Academy Cemetery in Blue Mountain. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany, and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
- Sharon Denise “Deenee” Hill Wortham — 39, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at her home in Memphis. Services were held this morning at the West Antioch Church in Senatobi. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home of Hernando was in charge of arrangements.
One killed in powerful storms

UPDATE: SWM Company on CR 166 was damaged due to the storms. The company is looking to try and move into another building but is shut down.
Oxford School District announced at 12:50 p.m. that they will be keeping the students until the threat of storms is past. There will be no early release.
Lafayette School District said they will remain with the students in the halls until the tornado warning is past. There will be no early release.

COLUMN: Water Valley’s matchup against Leflore County in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs had no feel of desperation or competition to it.
Instead of two teams matching skills that were ultimately decided by one great play like Lafayette’s series with Kosciusko, the Blue Devils easily defeated the completely over matched Tigers in a doubleheader that was as lacking of a championship caliber atmosphere as you could ever imagine. Burwell excited about Wisconsin-Whitewater
The chance to get back closer to relatives in Illinois and compete for a coach and program she felt comfortable with is why Alma Burwell chose to swim for Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday. Oxford’s Robinson signs with Delta State

**BREAKING NEWS: Storm kills one
A 55-year-old Oxford man died this morning after he lost control of his 18-wheeler on Highway 30.
Early reports say the man was traveling east near County Road 257 at about 4 this morning when his tractor trailer hit a fallen pine tree that was in the road. He lost control of the truck and ran off the road. He was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi where he was pronounced dead, according to Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy, (April 27, 2011)
Carr dealing with tragedy of house fire
Yes, bad things do happen to good people. Just ask Janice Carr, whose home and all her belongings were destroyed last week in a fire. Carr, who’s involved in a large number of community-oriented projects and programs, is dealing with the loss, however, as Editor Don Whitten writes in explaining her positive approach to life’s challenges.
