Oxford rallies to top Tigers in Game 1

BLOG: It was anything but pretty, but the Oxford Chargers were able to rebound from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Hernando Tigers 7-5 in Game 1 of the second round matchup between the two Class 5A foes. The lead exchanged hands several times between the Chargers and Tigers at OHS’ Edwin Moak Field, with Oxford striking last.

Dustin Williams led off the bottom of the sixth by reaching second base via an error and was replaced by pinch runner Toler Presley. Senior third baseman Shea Mnichowski attempted to sacrifice Presley over, but relief pitcher Lee Elander over threw his third baseman trying to get the lead runner on the bunt and Presley scored easily.

Designated hitter William Elliott extended Oxford’s lead with a single through the left side of the infield that scored Mnichowski.

Oxford starter Hunt Halford finished what he had started, getting the Tigers in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory.

Oxford will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Hernando for Game 2. (April 29, 2011)
