LHS tennis splits weekend matches

Lafayette ended the regular season with two matches on the road at Corinth.

The Commodores beat host Corinth, 5-2, before losing 5-2 to Newton County. In the victory over Corinth, Lafayette’s Mallory Davis defeated Catherine Coleman 6-2, 6-4 in girls singles and then gained one of the two points for the team against Newton County when she beat Kaley Bufkin 6-4, 6-0.

Lafayette won four of five doubles matches against Corinth, including a clean sweep in girls action.

The No. 1 team of Ashley Smith and Lauren Cullen beat Katie Knight and Shelby McClain 6-3, 6-0, while the No. 2 team of Kathryn Owen and Abbey Pate downed Annalee Hendrick and Laney Kemp 6-4, 6-3.

In mixed doubles play, Barron Pruitt and Brittany Mann downed Brandon Nhek and Kelsey Tweedle 6-4, 6-0. Corinth’s No. 1 boys team beat Tyler Odom and Austin Arrington 6-3, 6-2, while Austin McElwain beat Lafayette’s Garrett Reed 6-1, 6-0.

The other victory for Lafayette against Newton County came from the No. 2 boys doubles team of Pruitt and Arrington, who topped David Brand 6-2, 6-2.

LHS (9-5 overall) will return to action against Pontotoc in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs at the courts behind Oxford-University Stadium. (April 18, 2011, Page 2B)
