LHS rally knocks out Lady Patriots

Exciting doesn’t even begin to describe the girls fastpitch softball game played between Lewisburg and Lafayette at LHS on Thursday night. In a contest that felt more like a heavyweight title fight, it was the Lady Commodores that delivered the final hit that garnered a knockout blow in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Pitcher Cameron Mize drove in the game-winning run for LHS, who rallied from a three-run deficit during the middle innings and a one-run deficit in the seventh to post a 14-13 win, while catcher Corey Hollis scored the winning run. The victory allowed the Lady Commodores to grab a strangle-hold on first place in the division and sweep Lewisburg, a team they pounded 12-0 on the road on Tuesday.

Thursday’s win was especially sweet for LHS, who has all but wrapped up the division title, because of the distractions the team faced a little over a month ago when former head coach Cay Papagolos was re-assigned. Mize and Hollis talked about how much closer the team has grown since that decision was made and how improved the team has become because they all stayed so close to each other. Mize thought the team has really played well since the end of the Southaven Tournament, while Hollis agreed and gave even more reason for the recent wins. (April 15, 2011, Page 7A)
