Lady Commodores fall to N. Pontotoc

BLOG: Lauren Rodgers’ single to right field proved to be the difference for North Pontotoc in its 4-3 come-from-behind win over Lafayette in the first game of the best-of-three Class 4A softball series on Friday in Ecru.Rodgers’ single capped a dramatic comeback for North Pontotoc (23-3 overall) against the Lady Commodores, who led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. North Pontotoc was able to scratch across a run in the sixth on a triple from Arriann Henry and a groundout from Brianna Gable in the sixth. The Lady Vikings then tied the contest with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run triple from Courtney Quillian to force extra innings.

In the eighth, teams have to place runners on second base to start an inning in what is called an “international tiebreaker.” LHS was unable to plate its runner after Gable got two quick outs and then finished the frame with a strikeout following a walk. North Pontotoc started the eighth off with a double from Gable and had an opportunity to score Henry, who started on second, but a great throw from LHS left fielder Rae Drewrey allowed catcher Corey Hollis to tag out Henry at the plate.

Gable remained on second until a groundout by Chandler Gates advanced her to second and Rodgers’ single allowed her to score.

After a scoreless first two innings, LHS (11-7) jumped on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the third inning. M.C. Pate and Hollis had back-to-back singles to set the table for Cameron Mize, who drove them both in with a single to right. The Lady Commodores went 1-2-3 in the fourth before plating their third run in the fifth inning on a North Pontotoc error.

The second game of the series will be played today at 2 at LHS. If the Lady Commodores win the contest, a third and final contest would be played approximately 20 minutes after the second. (April 30, 2011)
