Chargers pound Clarksdale in 5A opener

Oxford’s tennis team had no trouble defeating the Clarksdale Wildcats in its Class 5A playoff opener on Friday at Avent Park. The Chargers were led by Zach Wilder at boys singles, who beat James Jackson 6-0, 6-0.

The mixed doubles team of Abby Daniels and Cari Hansen defeated Jasmine Pittman and Michelle Patterson 6-0, 6-0 to also capture a perfect match win.

In girls singles, Oxford’s Ann Marie Edlin beat Thresa Jackson, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 1 boys doubles, Robert Nance and Andrew Mullen topped Ambrose Wilson and Quinatrus Gardner 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 boys doubles, Judson Watson and Arlis Williams topped David Henley and Alejandro Carrillo 6-2, 6-2.

The No. 1 girls doubles team of Mary Bryan Barksdale and Sterling Davis took down Taboria Orange and Portia Jackson 6-1, 6-0, while the No. 2 girls doubles team of Sarah Nash and Erin Dyer beat Shantie Sykes and Kierra Eckles 6-1, 6-1.

The Chargers (16-1 overall) will be back in action Friday at Ridgeland for the second round of the 5A playoffs. (April 25, 2011, Page 3B)
