Blue Devils pound their way to win

An opportunity to defend their Class 3A North Half title is what the Water Valley Blue Devils earned on Friday with their 13-2 win over South Pontotoc at Blue Devil Field. Paced by an offense that collected three home runs and 11 hits total in five innings, WVHS secured a spot in the upcoming 3A playoffs with the one-sided win over the Cougars.
There were several offensive heroes on the night for the Blue Devils (12-7 overall), but none bigger than third baseman Taylor King, who drove in five RBIs on a two-run double in the first inning and a three-run homer in the fourth. WVHS has relied on its potent offense to beat teams so far this year, but the way the team played defensively and used a solid pitching effort from Drew Pratt to shut down the Cougars made coach Kary Bridges feel like the team had started to turn the corner and build for the playoffs. (April 11, 2011, Page 3B)
