Marking 150th anniversary of soldiers’ departure from Oxford
A member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Virginian Nancy Faxon has spent years protecting and promoting the South’s heritage and history.
For the past eight years, she’s worked to preserve and honor soldiers found in a forgotten burial ground by restoring their gravestones and cleaning up the overgrown thicket that grew around the graves. (April 29, 2011, Page 3A)
Health initiative ends on a tasteful note

- Georgia Sue Nicholson Evans — 50, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville. Visitation will be prior to the service from noon until 2 at the funeral home.
- Addie Sue Fuller — 88, formerly of Oxford, died Wednesday, March 30, in Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oxford’s Shiloh Church Cemetery.
- Nathan Lee “Nell” Gordon — 78, died Thursday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc.
- Glenn Russell Jarrett — 84, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville. Services will be held at 2 this afternoon in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Browning Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12:30 until 2 at the funeral home.
- Gladys Boatright Metts — 92, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at her home in Oxford. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Yellow Leaf Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Yellow Leaf Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m., prior to the service at the church. Seven Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
- Kenneth Mullin — 55, died Thursday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services are incomplete with Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford.
City employee killed in 1-car wreck
Kenneth Mullin Sr, 55 of Oxford, an employee of the city, was killed in a car accident Thursday afternoon. Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of Mullin’s funeral arrangements. (April 29, 2011, Page 2A)
A close call for many
Pine Flat Community began recovery efforts on Thursday while most of the community remained in shock over the damages to the area. Volunteers came to help begin putting together the pieces of their lives. (April 29, 2011, Page 1A)
How you can help
Several local individuals and organizations are accepting donations to help the Mississippi tornado victims.
Donations are being accepted at the Pine Flat Methodist Church on CR 422 and at Fire Station # 1 in Oxford. Cash donations are accepted on Saturday at the Courthouse Lawn for Red Cross.
