Papagolos relieved of coaching duties

Lafayette’s softball team will have a new leader the remainder of the year after four-year coach Cay Papagolos was relieved of her coaching duties by Lafayette Athletics Director Jeff Nelson Tuesday afternoon.Lafayette Athletics Director Jeff Nelson confirmed this morning that Papagolos would not finish the season as the Lady Commodores’ head coach. Melinda Scruggs, who served as Papagolos’ assistant the past season, has been named the interim head coach. Scruggs, who also coaches the girls soccer program, will be the head coach through the end of the season and possibly beyond based on the way the remainder of the year goes for her schedule in relation to soccer.

Nelson said Scruggs was more than willing to take over the program currently and help lead the Lady Commodores, who have played just one game so far this year, due to her familiarity with the girls and the sport.

As for making the change at the start of the year, Nelson said he felt like it was in the best interest of the school district to do it now rather than make a change three weeks into the season or even after the season. Nelson added that he felt like the program was not headed in the direction he felt was best for the district. (March 9, 2011, Page 6)
