Four Lafayette High lifters qualified for next month’s Class 4A state powerlifting meet with top three finishes this past weekend in the North Half meet held at Lexington-McClain. Lafayette finished tied third as a team in the event with 28 points. North Pontotoc also had 28 points. McClain won the overall North Half title with 44 points.New Albany was second with 34 points, while Pontotoc was fifth with 22.
Josh Mills was the lone first-place finisher for the Commodores. The 114-pound lifter totaled a 715 pounds thanks to a 290-pound squat, 145 bench press and 280 deadlift. Second-place finishers included Mario Toles (275) and D.Q. Reynolds (show). Toles totaled a 1,395 with a 580 squat, 245 bench and 570 deadlift. Reynolds totaled 1,380 with a 500 squat, 570 deadlift and 310 bench. Lafayette’s third-place finisher included J.D. Driver in the 132 class. He totaled 785 thanks to a 280 squat, 160 bench and 345 deadlift.
Jamel Dennis was fourth in the 198 class with a 1,215 total. He squatted 475, deadlift 475 and benched 265. He missed qualifying for the state meet by just 15 pounds. Cortez Coleman (242) totaled a 1,310 thanks to a 440 squat, deadlift 600 and a 270 bench.
DeAndre Greer (275) totaled a 1,300 with a 570 squat, 290 bench and a 440 deadlift. Demetrius Owens (308) totaled a 1,285 with a 550 squat, 305 bench and a 430 deadlift. Calen Coleman (198) rounded out the LHS lifters with a 1,095 total. He benched 285, squatted 405 and deadlifted 405. The state tournament will be held April 16 in Jackson. (March 8, 2011, Page 8)
