Kendricks shines at Southern Miss

Oxford track standout Sam Kendricks set the pole vault record at Southern Miss over the weekend with a jump of 15 feet, 1 inch.  The Ole Miss signee accomplished the feat at the University of Southern Mississippi High School Invitational meet held Friday in Hattiesburg.  Kendricks set the record despite wet conditions and standing water on the runway.“After a five hour drive, Sam just felt like he needed to go ahead and try to jump,” OHS coach Scott Kendricks said. “A lot of vaulters decided not to continue because of the rain, win and water-soaked vaulting pit. That kind of opened the door for Sam to pick his own heights and take a few jumps after everyone else was out of the competition. He got real soaking wet on the few jumps he did take, but 15-1 is a record that will stand a while.”

Kendricks and the remainder of the OHS track team will be back in action Saturday in the Oxford Invitational at Bobby Holcomb Field. (March 7, 2011, Page 8A)
