The annual Crosstown Classic tennis matchup between Oxford and Lafayette ended up going the way of the Chargers on Tuesday evening at Avent Park. OHS went on to defeat LHS 7-0 in a competitive match that had some tight moments.
The most competitive of the seven matches came at mixed doubles where Oxford’s Andrew Mullen and Erin Dyer took on Barron Pruitt and Mallory Davis. Mullen and Dyer won the first set 7-6 and then won the second set 7-5.
The No. 1 girls doubles match was also competitive. Lafayette’s Lauren Cullen and Ashley Smith paired up to take on Mary Bryan Barksdale and Sterling Davis. Barksdale and Davis won the match, 6-4, 6-3, to capture the victory.
In singles play, Oxford’s Arlis Williams was substituted for Zach Wilder and Williams defeated Lafayette’s Garrett Reed 6-4, 6-0. In girls singles play, the Chargers’ Abby Daniels beat Hayley Hamann 6-0, 6-1.
Rounding out doubles play was Oxford’s No. 1 boys doubles team of Wilder and Robert Nance. The duo defeated Lafayette Jacob Roberts and Hunter Knight 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 boys doubles, Oxford’s Baxter Elliot and Judson Watson took down T.J. Hollis and Tyler Odom, 6-1, 6-2. The final doubles match of the day at No. 2 girls doubles saw Oxford’s Cari Hansen and Katie Krouse defeat Lafayette’s Kathryn Owen and Abbey Pate, 6-2, 6-2.
OHS will be back in action Thursday at home against Tupelo at 4 p.m., while LHS will be off the remainder of the week. (March 30, 2011, Page 6)
