Chargers fall to New Hope

A home run provided by Dillon Hawkins in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted New Hope to a 7-6 win over Oxford in the first region game of the season Tuesday. at New Hope. Hawkins finished the game 2-for-4 and his home run helped the Trojans break a 6-6 tie. Zac Barber was saddled with the loss for the Chargers, who are now 6-5 on the year. Barber (0-1) pitched 2.1 innings and allowed three hits and a walk while finishing with a strikeout. Hunt Halford started the game for OHS and logged four innings, allowing six hits, two strikeouts and two walks.

Barber finished the night with two hits, including a grand slam in the sixth inning as part of the Chargers’ five runs in the frame. Henry Webb also had two hits for Oxford, including a solo homer to score one of the Chargers’ six runs. James Lear and Halford also had hits for the Chargers, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the contest.

Taylor Stafford (3-1) earned the win for New Hope and finished with three RBIs and two hits on offense.

The two teams will meet again Friday at Edwin Moak Field at 6 p.m. The game can be heard locally on 95.5 FM. (March 23, 2011, Page 6)
