Slugging it out: Oxford showing progress

The 2011 season has yet to officially begin and already the Lady Chargers look like their bats will have more pop to them.On Saturday, Oxford unofficially opened its season with a 6-2 victory over Olive Branch and a 1-1 tie with Vardaman in two classic games to christen its brand new stadium atop the hillside behind the high school.

In the day’s first game, Oxford scored more runs than it did in 17 games one year ago — and in six innings, no less.

That’s progress, which is what Oxford coach Lauren Hill is looking for this season after posting a 3-17 overall record a year ago.

With a roster that has just one junior and one senior, Hill knows there will be growing pains, but Saturday’s performance was a good step in the right direction. (February 28, 2011, Page 7)
