Panty thief indicted
A grand jury has indicted Joseph P. Lillo on 11 charges of burglary for allegedly breaking into the homes of local women and stealing their panties and other items. (February 25, 2011, Page 2A)
Prosecutors’ attempt to block Williams retrial denied
State prosecutors have lost an attempt to have an appeals court rehear a decision to overturn a murder conviction for David Jackson Williams, who was found guilty in 2009 of killing Demetria Bracey, also a former Ole Miss student, with a knife and leaving her body in a closet for four days. Homeless Task Force to meet Sunday
In an attempt to address the growing needs of Lafayette County’s homeless and displaced persons, the Homeless Task Force will be meeting on Sunday to update those attending on current projects and get some ideas for future ones. The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the conference room of the Oxford Police Department. (February 25, 2011, Page 3A)
City achieves Class 4 fire rating
The city of Oxford has been awarded a Class 4 insurance rating by the Mississippi State Rating Bureau. The rating bureau notified Oxford officials on Tuesday that Oxford went from a 5 rating down to a 4 rating, however, local insurance companies say the new classification probably won’t lower insurance premiums by much — if at all. Mother, son share the importance of art together
Mary Sloan was tickled pink and more than a bit surprised when her 20-year-old son asked her to take an art history class with him at the University of Mississippi during the winter intersession. - Delores Owen Busby — 84, died this morning at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home of Oxford.
- Harold Cooke died this morning at Methodist Central University Hospital in Memphis. Arrangements are incomplete with Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc.
- Barbara Fournie — 92, died on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at the Meadows Nursing Home in Fulton. No formal services were held. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
- Shirley Dale Johnson — 71, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Cornerstone Health and Rehabilitation Center in Corinth. Services will be held at 3 this afternoon in the Booneville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Lebanon Cemetery.
More than 80 students comprise the cast, crew of Seussical
About 80 Oxford Middle School students helped to pull of the colorful adaptation of the Broadway hit, “Seussical,” a one-act, 90-minute show. The cast performed the show for area elementary school students Thursday and will be performing 6:30 tonight in the Kayla Mize auditorium at Oxford High School. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. (February 25, 2011, Page 1B)
