Oxford teams facing tough tests in North Half

If the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers are going to make it to the “Big House” later this month, then they will both have to knock off two of the best teams in the state tonight in Class 5A North Half play.Oxford’s Chargers (17-10 overall) will be in action at Indianola-Gentry against the 23-1 Jackson Provine Rams, who are regarded as the second-best team in the state, regardless of classification. Oxford’s girls, who just defeated Clarksdale on the road in the first round to improve to 24-3, will take on Jackson Callaway at Lanier.

Tipoff for the girls game is set for 6 p.m., while the Chargers play at 7:30. A win advances the teams on to the North Half title game on Saturday, while a loss concludes the season.

OHS coach Drew Tyler said it will be a challenge for his Chargers to defeat the Rams led by Ole Miss signee, 6-foot-4 Jarvis Summers, who is regarded as one of the top players in the state. (February 18, 2011, Page 7A)
