Rebs hold on to sweep Wright State

(BLOG) The Ole Miss Diamond Rebels will look to get out the brooms today against Wright State with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium.It’s a beautifully sunny day in Oxford, Miss., with temperatures projected to be in the mid-70s during the game.

After cruising to a 15-6 win on Friday, and rallying to win 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday, Ole Miss will send junior college transfer Austin Wright to the mound to help the Rebs earn their first opening weekend sweep since 2008 (vs. Minnesota) and its sixth 3-0 start to the season since 2000.

Wright, a left-hander originally from Schaumburg, Ill., transferred to Ole Miss prior to the season from Chipola (Fla.) Community College, where he was teammates with fellow transfers Eric Sauls and Blake Newalu (pronounced Nev-AH-loo).

Wright is a two-time draftee (23rd round in 2008 and again in 2010) who posted a 7-3 record with a 3.90 ERA, striking out 97 and walking 50 in 85.0 innings last season.

Wright State will send senior right-hander Michael Woytek to the mound.

BOTTOM 3: 0-1: Alex Yarbrough extended his RBI streak to three games with an RBI-single in the bottom of the third that scored Blake Newalu from third base. Newalu had led off the frame with a double off the left field wall.
TOP 4: 1-1: Wright State tied the game up in the next frame, scoring Ryan Ashe on a fielder’s choice from third base.
BOTTOM 4: 1-2: Ole Miss responds in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-out, RBI-single from Preston Overbey to score Miles Hamblin easily from second base.
TOP 6: 2-2: Side-armer Trent Rothlin began the inning in place of starter Austin Wright and got into a bit of a jam, loading the bases. He allowed one run, but was able to get two groundouts to get out of the inning.
BOTTOM 6: 2-6: The game didn’t remain tied for long as Hamblin put Ole Miss back ahead with a 2-RBI single up the middle, scoring Matt Snyder and Matt Tracy. Snyder and Tracy had been sacrificed to third and second base in the previous at-bat by a perfect bunt from Jordan King down the third-base line. Three at-bats later Tanner Mathis broke the game open with a 2-RBI double, scoring Newalu and Hamblin.
TOP 8: 5-6: Justin Kopale brought Wright State back within striking distance in the eighth, knocking a two-RBI single with no outs and relief pitcher R.J. Hively on the mound for Ole Miss. Two at-bats later Kopale scored on a single up the middle by Sam Picchiotti and Hively was pulled in favor of Brett Huber.

Huber was effective in the ninth inning, getting the Raiders out in order to secure his first save of the season.

Trent Rothlin earned his first win of the season, allowing one run in 2.0 innings of work while striking out two.

WSU starter Mike Woytek was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits and thee walks in 5.1 innings. He also struck out one.

Newalu led all batters with three hits. He also scored a team-best two runs.

Next up for Ole Miss (3-0) is a pair of mid-week games against Memphis on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Arkansas State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Matt Tracy will start the game against Memphis, Hively will get the start against Wright State.
