LIVE Alumni Game Blog

Hello from chilly Oxford-University Stadium, where the current Rebels and former Rebels will face one another at 1 p.m.Despite precipitation last night and a temperature hovering just under 40 degrees, the past and present Rebels will play on. (The good news is there’s no precipitation in the forecast for the rest of the evening.)

Already today we’ve bumped into former Rebels Stephen Head, Alex Presley, Chris Coghlan, Brett Bukvich and Ryan Bukvich wearing the Rebels’ pinstripes with their professional lids.

The current squad will be in the visitor’s dugout and wearing the red uniforms.

On a side note, the new scoreboard is up and running and looks pretty sharp.

Pittsburgh Pirate farmhands Phil Irwin and Nathan Baker warming up in front of the home team’s dugout.

*Both teams are using wood bats today.

Below is a list of the alumni team with where they are currently in the pros:
Matt Tolbert, Utility infielder with the Minnesota Twins. Last season, Tolbert hit .230 in 87 ABs with the Twins.
Cody Overbeck, 3B in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Last season, Overbeck made it up to Double-A and hit .255 with 13 HRs for the Reading Phillies.
Tim Ferguson, CF in the Kansas City Royals organization. Ferguson played with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie League) and Burlington Bees (Low-A) and hit a combined .277.
Kevin Mort, Middle INF in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Mort split time between rookie league and Low-A and hit a combined .281 in 185 at-bats.
Chris Coghlan, OF for the Florida Marlins. Coghlan won the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year award for the Marlins but was sidelined for much of last season with an injury. This season he is expected to move from left field to center field.
Brett Basham, C in the San Diego Padres organization. After spending two seasons in the Padres’ organization, Basham hung up his cleats last season.
Justin Henry, Utility OF/INF in the Detroit Tigers organization. Henry made it up to the Triple-A last season, hitting .269 in 44 games for the Toledo MudHens.
Jordan Henry, OF in the Cleveland Indians organization. Henry hit .300 in 74 games for the Akron Zip, the Indians’ Double-A affiliate.
Drew Pomeranz, LHP in the Cleveland Indians organization. Pomeranz was the No. 5 overall draft pick in the 2010 MLB First-year players draft but did not pitch.
Mark Holliman, RHP in the Boston Red Sox organization. After playing in the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers organizations, Holliman caught on with the Red Sox last season and made it up to Triple-A.
Stephen Head, LHP. After playing in the Frontier League last season as a position player, Head has decided to come back as a pitcher in an attempt to catch on with a minor league organization. Head was drafted by the Cleveland Indians out of Ole Miss in 2005.
Alex Presley, OF in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Presley was one of the bigger surprises in all of minor league baseball last season, shooting from High-A to Triple-A, where he hit .294 in 69 games.
Nathan Baker, LHP in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Baker is a MiLBer that is expected to move quickly though the ranks. Split between A and High-A, Baker went 8-8 with a 3.00 ERA.
Ryan Bukvich, RHP. Bukvich has not pitched in the major — or minor — leagues since 2008.
Aaron Barrett, RHP in the Washington Nationals organization. Barrett was 0-5 with a 9.43 ERA in Low-A last year.
Lance Lynn, RHP in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. After climbing up to Triple-A, Lynn appears to be on the cusp of getting The Call from the Cardinals. Lynn is invited to the Cardinals’ spring training in Jupiter, Fla., this season.
Brett Bukvich, LHP. After pitching in Low-A in the Florida Marlins’ organization in 2009, Bukvich is no longer in baseball.
Phil Irwin, RHP in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Irwin had an effective 2010 season in Class-A, going 6-3 with a 3.35 ERA in 23 apps.
