Lady Chargers top Clarksdale in first round

It wasn’t long after the Oxford Lady Chargers lost to West Point in the Region 2-5A tournament championship last Friday that coach Shayne Linzy was looking forward to Monday’s first round of the 5A playoffs.

Despite Clarksdale’s overall size superiority and playing away from home, Linzy felt like his team would respond in fine fashion and be a very tough team for the Wildcats to have to defeat. His intuition proved to be right as the Lady Chargers used their speed and stamina to knock off last year’s 5A North Half champion, 54-52, in the first step to advancing to Jackson for the MHSAA state tournament.Erika Sisk led the Lady Chargers (24-3 overall) with 27 points in the victory, while several others played critical roles in the victory over the Wildcats (21-3), who Linzy thought was the physically gifted team his Lady Chargers had played this year. (February 15, 2011, Page 6)
