Lafayette got its 2011 season off to a great start by posting two wins in two classic games held at Tupelo. The Commodores beat Saltillo 9-2 on Friday and Nettleton 11-1 on Saturday. Jarrett Patton picked up the win over Saltillo by logging five innings of work, allowing one run and one hit during his time on the mound.
Tyler Mize, Hunter Robinson, Dylan Gossett and Patton all had two hits in the win. Mize drove in two of the three runs in the second inning to help trigger the offensive explosion, while Patton scored Mize later in the frame with two outs.
Kent Hill also had two RBIs in the victory. Patton also collected a second RBI later in the contest.
In the win over Nettleton, Robinson hit a home run in the first inning to get LHS on the board. Josh Mills had a single in the frame, while Gossett had an RBI. LHS scored three runs in the third, while Mills punctuated the scoring effort with a three-run homer in the fifth. Gossett earned the win for LHS by going four innings.
LHS will be back in action Thursday with a doubleheader at Pontotoc starting with a 4 p.m. game against Mooreville. (February 28, 2011, Page 8)
