County pulls plug on ‘bath salts’

While the Mississippi Legislature is looking at a law to ban fake bath salts, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance Monday that makes the item illegal to possess and sell in the county.

The “bath salts” contain several dangerous chemicals including mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovaleron, which is a psychoactive drug that acts like a stimulant that has four times the potency of drugs like Ritalin.

Referred to as synthetic cocaine in the ordinance, the bath salts have been linked to violent behavior in its users. (February 8, 2011, Page 1A)
