Oxford’s knack for playing its best basketball in the postseason and winning division tournament titles under coach Drew Tyler continued Friday night as the Chargers knocked off West Point 71-61. The win not only secured a 10th championship trophy for Tyler in his 14 years of coaching at OHS, it also ensured a home playoff game Tuesday against Clarksdale a year after the Chargers had to travel to Ridgeland.Oxford’s girls team wasn’t as fortunate as the Chargers, as West Point defeated the Lady Chargers 67-54 in the girls division title game.
Justin Fondren, the Division 2-5A MVP, ended up leading the Chargers (16-10 overall) with 19 points in the win, while DeShaun McNeal, Luke Gibbs and Nick Brown finished with 18, 13 and 11 points respectively. Oxford’s ability to spread the scoring around made a huge difference in the win, especially late in the game when the Chargers had to make their free throws to keep West Point at bay.
