Chargers capture Division 2-5A title

BLOG — Led by Justin Fondren, this season’s Division 2-5A MVP, the Oxford Chargers defeated West Point 71-61 Friday night to win the 2-5A tournament title.Fondren finished with 19 points in the win for the Chargers, who will now host Clarksdale Tuesday night in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. DeShaun McNeal, who has continued to improve during the season for the Chargers after a standout season on the football field, complemented Fondren with 18 points, while Luke Gibbs and Nick Brown added 13 and 11 points respectively.

Oxford coach Drew Tyler said he was proud of how his team played in the win, and overcame a late surge by the Green Wave to capture the Charger’s 10th tourney title in the last 14 years.

“I thought the game had a lot of different looks. I felt like we had to win the game three different times. We got up three different times and may have lost (lead) twice. You expect them to do that,” Tyler said. “Good teams, in the final game, in the championship game like this, they’re going to make runs at you. My guys were winded. I didn’t sub a whole lot tonight, so I’m really proud with how they played with a lot of minutes under their belt.”

Oxford’s girls were unable to duplicate the Chargers’ success as West Point defeated OHS 67-54 in the 2-5A title game. Erika Sisk led OHS with 28 points. The Lady Chargers will now travel to Clarksdale Monday for the first round of the 5A playoffs. (February 12, 2011)
