BLOG — Several former local baseball standouts helped the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers earn two wins Wednesday afternoon at Ranger Field in Senatobia.
Former Lafayette High standout Luke McCullough had two hits, including a double, in the Rangers’ 8-2 win over Arkansas Baptist in the second game of the doubleheader, while former Water Valley standout Josh Johnson collected a hit and a walk as the Rangers’ leadoff man. Johnson was last year’s EAGLE Player of the Year in baseball, while McCullough was a three-time member of the team during his varsity career.
Johnson is playing shortstop for the Rangers, who defeated Arkansas Baptist 11-8 in the season opener, while McCullough, who scored two runs in that game, is playing centerfield. Three other former area players also saw action Wednesday. Tank Hervey, a former Blue Devil, started the first game and logged 2.2 innings. Denzel Goolsby, a former Commodore, had a hit in the win, while Brandon Brooks, another former WVHS standout, served as a pinch hitter in the second game.
NWCC will be back in action Saturday at Southwest Tenn. in Cordova, TN. (February 17, 2011)
