The Water Valley Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils basketball squads got their District 2-3A seasons off to good starts with wins over South Pontotoc on Friday night. Water Valley’s girls were led by Ashley Phillips, who scored the game-winning basket on a layup at the buzzer in a 59-58 win. She finished with 22 points, while C.C. Phillips also scored 22 points. Haley Vance added 15 to account for all of the Lady Blue Devils’ scoring. Water Valley’s boys defeated South Pontotoc 75-47. Five players scored in double figures for the Blue Devils (12-5 overall). Matt Dalton led the way with 17 points. Fred McGee chipped in 15, McKendrick Bounds had 13, while Walt McCullough and T.J. Sims finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Blue Devils finished the weekend with a 2-0 record as they defeated Coffeeville for the third time this season. Dalton led the team with 20 points in the 77-51 win. McGee had 19, while Sims and McCullough scored 14 and nine points. Coffeeville got the best of the Lady Devils with a 61-58 win. C.C. Phillips led the way with 27 points, whie Ashley Phillips had 24 points. (January 17, 2011, Page 8)
