**UPDATE* Governor says election still on

Governor Haley Barbour has ordered the January 11, 2011 Special Election to proceed as scheduled.

“With inclement weather conditions lingering for voters in the northern parts of the State, we understand circumstances are not ideal for casting a ballot,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “We want to encourage voters to exercise caution to ensure safety when heading to the polls.”

As with all elections, state law requires polls be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The Secretary of State’s office is attempting to contact all counties to determine any issues regarding the opening or closing of precincts in the northern parts of the State.  As we are notified of any closings, we will host the information on our website at www.sos.ms.gov and inform local media outlets.

Voters are encouraged to contact their local Circuit Clerk or election officials with any questions, or, contact the Secretary of State’s Elections hotline at (800) 829-6786. (January 10, 2011)
