A clean sweep is what the Lafayette High basketball teams were able to achieve over Oxford on Tuesday night in the lone meeting between the two schools on the hardwood this season.Lafayette’s Lady Commodores overcame an early deficit in the first half to defeat Oxford 55-50 in the first game of the varsity doubleheader, while the Commodores held off the Chargers for a 57-51 win in the nightcap. Lafayette also earned a win over Oxford in the junior varsity girls game and defeated Oxford 43-42 in the ninth-grade boys game leading into the doubleheader.
Missed free-throws and scoring opportunities, early and late, proved to be the biggest differences in the loss for the Lady Chargers in the first game. LHS made 13 of its 17 shots from the line, while Oxford was just 10-for-22. Oxford also committed 12 turnovers in a game that saw LHS overcome a 12-7 deficit in the first quarter and turn it into a 34-16 lead midway through the third. (January 19, 2011, Page 6)
