Lafayette’s boys hoops squad won its first Region 2-4A game of the season Tuesday with a 50-49 win over Lewisburg in Olive Branch. The Commodores trailed Lewisburg 28-26 at the half, but was able to outscore Lewisburg 12-11 in the third quarter and 12-10 in the fourth to pull out the win. Brandon Mack led the team with 17 points, while Keeyon Tyson and Jeremiah Jones each scored 10 points. Tevin Buford also had nine points. LHS coach Eric Robertson said the team faced a similar situation at North Panola where the Commodores grabbed a rebound and tried to win the game on a last-second shot. Following a timeout made by Robertson, Mack was able to hit the game-winning shot with 1.2 seconds left.
“I think the situation at North Panola helped us in this game. We were better prepared because we had faced the same situation less than a week ago,” Robertson said. “All of our kids played extremely hard and found a way to finish. That is what I’m most proud of. In sports you have to finish. We were able to do that today.”
LHS will be back in action Friday at home against Center Hill, starting with a junior varsity boys game at 5 p.m. (January 26, 2011, Page 7)
