The Oxford seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball teams had no problem pulling off a sweep of South Pontotoc Thursday night in the teams first action since the Christmas break. The eighth-graders defeated South Pontotoc 48-25 thanks to 13 points from Josh Gibbs, eight points from K.T. McCollins and seven points each from David Dennis and Michael McGhee. McGhee and McCollins each had five blocks in the win for the Chargers, who are now 12-2 overall.
The seventh-grade Chargers improved to 7-1 thanks to a great defensive effort from Zack Cousar and a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) from Kenzie Phillips. Will Swindoll had seven points, while Christopher Sandroni and Hunter Copeland each scored six points. Oxford’s girls also posted two wins over South Pontotoc. The seventh-graders won 24-9 thanks to 13 points from Emily Robinson and 10 from Kyla Malone. The eighth-grade Lady Chargers also won 38-32 and got 11 points from Bre’anna Pettis and nine from Tamara Wadlington. All four Oxford teams will be back in action Monday, weather permitting, at home against Grenada starting at 5 p.m. (January 7, 2011, Page 8A)
