A mid-morning disturbance at a home in Coffeeville Thursday has left a Water Valley resident dead and a man in custody facing the charge of murder. Monica Sayles, 19, of Water Valley was shot and killed by a single .22 caliber gunshot, according to Yalobusha County Sheriff Lance Humphreys, who was on the scene shortly after the shooting happened. The man charged with killing Sayles is Reginald Martin, 17, of Coffeeville.
According to Humphreys, the two had a 2-year-old child together and were boyfriend and girlfriend. According to information provided through a witness, an argument broke out between the two and Martin shot Sayles. A .22 caliber pistol was found at the scene. The call about the shooting came into dispatchers at 10 a.m. and shortly before noon, Martin was taken into custody by Yalobusha County sheriff deputies.
Humphreys said his department was aided by members of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and officers from Coffeeville. District attorney John Champion also visited Yalobusha County Thursday to help authorities decide Martin’s fate. For more information about the case, see Friday’s EAGLE. (January 6, 2011)
