Former Memphis University School standout quarterback Barry Brunetti finally turned rumors into fact in the last hour when he announced on Twitter.com that he will transfer from West Virginia to Ole Miss.“Will be enrolling into Ole Miss University Spring semester,” he posted on the social media website at 12:41 p.m.
Brunetti spent his freshman season as a backup for the Mountaineers and had a limited role behind sophomore QB Geno Smith.
In previous media reports Brunetti had been quoted as saying one reason for transferring was to be closer to his mother, who is recovering from an automobile accident.
In hopes of avoiding the mandatory 1-year penalty for transfers, which would require him to miss the entire 2011 football season, Brunetti will apply for a family hardship waiver with the NCAA. Should he qualify, he would be allowed to play immediately.
As a freshman, Brunetti completed 4 of 9 passes for four yards while rushing one time for four yards.
During his recruitment from MUS, Brunetti was considered one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.
Brunetti enters a quarterback situation that will include juniors Nathan Stanley and Randall Mackey, former Tupelo standout Chris Garrett (who is transferring in and will have to sit out a year), JUCO transfer Zack Stoudt and incoming freshman and Itawamba-AHS standout Maikhail Miller.
Brunetti was also considering Memphis and Arkansas State.
