2011 Elections Calendar

Here’s an overview of key dates in the 2011 election cycle. You can download the official calendar from the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office here.

  • Jan. 1-March 1 — QUALIFYING PERIOD: Candidates may qualify to run in this year’s primary and general elections by filing the appropriate papers in the Lafayette County Circuit Clerk’s office (or, for state and district offices, with the Mississippi Secretary of State). The deadline to qualify is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1.

For the primary election

  • June 17-July 30 — ABSENTEE VOTING: Absentee voters can cast their ballots at the Circuit Clerk’s office or request a ballot be mailed to them. The office will be open on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon on July 23 and 30 for absentee voting. Mail-in ballots must be received in the Circuit Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. on Aug. 1.
  • July 2 — VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE: The Circuit Clerk’s office will be open on this Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. This is the last day to register to vote in the primary election. Mail-in voter registration forms should also be postmarked by this date.
  • Aug. 2 — PRIMARY ELECTION: Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Aug. 23 — PRIMARY RUNOFF (if applicable): Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the event of a runoff. Also, the Circuit Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday mornings from 8 to noon on Aug. 13 and 20 for absentee voting in the primary runoff election.

For the general election

  • Sept. 24-Nov. 5 — ABSENTEE VOTING: Absentee voters may cast their ballots at the Circuit Clerk’s office, or request a ballot be mailed to them. The office will be open on Saturday mornings from 8 to noon on Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 for absentee voting. Mail-in absentee ballots must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Nov. 7 to be counted in the election.
  • Oct. 8 — VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE: The Circuit Clerk’s office will be open this Saturday morning from 8 to noon for voter registration ahead of the general election. Mail-in registration forms should also be postmarked by this day.
  • Nov. 8 — GENERAL ELECTION: Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
