Year in Review: Abbeville tornado kills one

It was a storm that altered quite a few lives in Abbeville.
The F2 tornado ripped through Abbeville on May 2. It was an early Sunday morning when it hit, damaging about 40 homes and taking one woman’s life. Phyllis Sabbatini, 45, was killed when the tornado directly hit her home. Nearby homes had severe damage as well. (December 28, 2010, Page 1)

Local projects squashed by Senate

When a $1.27 trillion funding bill was killed earlier this month by Republicans trying to rein in spending, Oxford lost $2.8 million it was expecting to get to renovate its aging historic City Hall. Some local transit projects and University of Mississippi initiatives also saw their funding cut as a result of this effort to bring federal spending under control. (December 28, 2010, Page 1)

Land owner said he will make things right

Land owner Braxton Comer said he wants to do what’s right and will take responsibility to clean up land he owns off Old Highway 7 that the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says is an illegal dump. The materials found on the property come from five homes that were torn down. Samples from where the homes were removed are being tested by MDEQ to check for possible asbestos contamination.

  • Cleala Mae Adams — 86, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services were held Monday at Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church in Panola County. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley was in charge of arrangements.
  • Daniel Edward Bynum Sr. — 51, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at his home near Oxford. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford.
  • Mary Jane James — 60, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at her home in Oxford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will follow in Eastover Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
  • Sue Lomax — 82, died Monday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford.
  • Doris Quarles — 81, formerly of Oxford, died Monday at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Arrangements are incomplete with Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford.

“O” Town Showdown has another good slate

Some of the better basketball teams in the North Mississippi area will be on display Wednesday and Thursday in the Oxford High gym in the annual ‘O’ Town Showdown.

OHS boys hoops coach Drew Tyler, who started the tournament with the hopes of bringing the best teams to the area every year, said this year’s field has some good matchups for fans to come watch. (December 28, 2010, Page 6)

Musicians tune up The Tone Room

Owning a commercial recording studio seemed to happen by coincidence for local musician David Kincaid.
Kincaid, who has been in the music scene for about 20 years, began collecting studio equipment a few years ago in an attempt to record some of his own tracks, but now he, along with producer/engineer Bryan Ward, is helping others reach their dreams in music at The Tone Room recording studio located at 1420 N. Lamar Blvd., Suite 102. (December 27, 2010, Page 8)
