Remember the good years during a bad football season

New judge to be sworn in on Thursday
An investiture ceremony will be held Thursday for newly elected Third Circuit Court Judge John A. Gregory who will fill the seat left open by Judge Henry L. Lackey, who officially ends his 17 years on the bench on Friday.
The ceremony will take place at 2 this afternoon at the Chickasaw County Courthouse in Okolona, where Gregory served as county prosecutor for 23 years. (December 30, 2010, Page 2A)
Health effort begins Monday
Thanks to the a new community health initiative, Healthy You, Healthy L.O.U., expert advice and support is free for those who wish to make 2011 the year they start living a healthier lifestyle.
The five-month program begins with a registration session Monday through Wednesday at the Baptist HealthPlex. Participants’ may stop by the HealthPlex any time between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. during these three days to record their weight, height, body mass index, and blood pressure to establish their starting point. While students, parents and staff of the Oxford School District celebrated after voters approved a $30 million bond for a new high school and massive capital improvement plan, students, parents and staff of the Lafayette County School District rejoiced over their football team winning the Class 4A state championship game.

Rebels sign McDonald’s All-American guard
Ole Miss head basketball coach Andy Kennedy announced today that former Memphis guard Jelan Kendrick is transferring to play for the Rebels.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Atlanta native can start practicing with the team in the upcoming semester and will be eligible to suit up for the Rebels next December. (December 30, 2010, Page 7A)
Lady ‘Dores surge to beat Horn Lake
A late surge proved to be crucial for the Lafayette Lady Commodores in their 53-41 victory over Horn Lake, while the Commodores were unable to find consistent scoring in their 52-30 loss to the Eagles on Day 1 of the “O” Town Showdown at the Oxford High gym on Wednesday evening. - Clarence Booker — 61, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Serenity-Martin Funeral Chapel in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Repass will be held at the West Spring Hill Church Life Center. Visitation will be held Friday from noon to 6 p.m., with family present from 5 to 6, at the funeral home.
- Alma B. Miller — 87, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Cambridge Cemetery in Oxford. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Holly Springs Funeral Home.
- Doris Quarles — 81, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Tallahatchie Oxford Missionary Baptist Association Building. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery in Oxford. Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.
OHS teams split pair in ‘O’ Town opener
Early leads played big roles in the Chargers’ and Lady Chargers’ games on Day 1 of the “O” Town Showdown on Wednesday in the Oxford High gym.
While the Lady Chargers were able to turn an early 13-point lead into a 59-45 victory over Hernando, the Oxford boys weren’t as lucky, falling behind by 12 points in the first quarter before eventually losing to Shannon 76-60. (December 30, 2010, Page 6A)
